KONG HYDROBOT Rappel/Belay Devices

Compared to other models, Hydrobot avoids the risk of accidental loss, avoids the rope twisting and avoids the wear of the connector. The charateristic which makes Hydrobot unique is the possibility to use it as auto-locking device in case of emergency ascending on one or two ropes (in connection with a Prusik knot). The possibility of overturning the central bar (fixed by a screw) allows the use by left-handers. REVIEWS:
Took the Hydrobots out for a spin during recent courses in Arizona. Let a few advanced students play with them, too. The device worked well in all modes on 9.2mm BW Canyon rope. Not so well on 8mm. Rappelling on a low-angle slab, it did not provide enough friction rigged in "standard" mode on single strand. Was able to add more wraps and get desirable friction, but would be concerned on an over-hanging rappel. Device is intended to work as an auto-locking device for ascending and haul systems. Worked okay on 9.2mm. Not at all on 8mm. The cross bar's travel is limited, so it will not pinch down tight on narrow diameter ropes. The instructions say it should work on 6-12mm. I'll play with it more, but for now I'll recommend it only for those who intend to use it on 8mm+ ropes, only for rappelling, not its auto-locking features; and for those who intend to use all features on 9.2mm+ ropes.
